Grilled Ham Steaks with Brown Sugar-Mustard Glaze

We love a good meaty steak, and whether the steaks are beef or pork, anything on the grill is super flavorful and extra delicious. This Grilled Ham Steak recipe gets a brown sugar glaze that puts it over the top! Easy and delish, you’re going to love this quick meal!

Cooking ham on the grill is super fast because it’s already cooked – all you’re doing is heating it and adding some extra smoke and grill flavor. And this easy meal can be made in two parts, so you can cut down on prep time by making the glaze ahead of time and having it ready to go. Perfect for busy weeknights for a quick dinner.

WHAT’S A HAM STEAK?

Cut from a whole ham, ham steaks are thicker slices of ham. You can get a boneless or bone-in ham steak – either will work for this recipe.

Fresh ham steaks are a great choice when you’re craving ham but don’t want to deal with a whole ham roast. Where to find pre-cooked ham steaks? They’re sold in any local grocery store wherever you’d find hams.

You can also cut your own ham steaks by buying a boneless ham and slicing steaks off of it. Pop the rest of the ham into the freezer for a ham casserole, cheddar cauliflower ham soup, maple glazed ham steaks, southern cola ham steak, and more.

Ingredients for grilled ham steaks.

Ingredients

The glaze in this recipe is optional but highly suggested! Sure, you can grill a ham steak and eat it, but the savory-sweet and delish glaze puts this ham steak recipe over the top! The glaze makes enough for 2 ham steaks, so double or triple the glaze ingredients if you’re grilling more than that.

  • Ham steaks – About 1/2 pound per person
  • Brown sugar – You can also use pure maple syrup.
  • Mustard – Any mustard will do. Dijon mustard is a great option.
  • Cayenne pepper – Gives the glaze a bit of heat.
  • Dried sage
  • Dried rosemary
  • Salt and pepper

HOW TO MAKE GRILLED HAM STEAKS WITH GLAZE

FOR THE GRILLED HAM STEAK

Prep the grill for direct heat by heating a charcoal chimney until the coals are 70% ashed over.

Pour the charcoal into the center of the grill, then cover and open the vents and preheat the grill to about 400 degrees F.

Pat the ham steaks dry, then place them on the hot grill over the coals (heat source) for 2 minutes. Rotate and grill for another 2 minutes.

Flip the ham steaks and cook another 4 minutes, rotating halfway through.

Brush the ham steaks with the glaze during the last minute of grilling time.

Serve immediately and enjoy!

TO MAKE THE GLAZE

Whisk the brown sugar, mustard, cayenne, sage, and rosemary in a small saucepan.

Simmer until thickened, then season with salt and pepper.

Girl Carnivore Expert Recipe Tips

  • For a gas grill, preheat the grill to medium-high heat, then grill according to the instructions.
  • Use a smoker box or foil pouch for more smoke flavor.
  • No time to make the glaze? BBQ sauce also works well – pick a sauce with some sweetness to highlight the ham flavor.
  • Ham steaks are injected with a solution to help keep them moist, but you still can overcook them – they only need to be heated through. That’s it!
  • The glaze will burn if your flame is too high. Just add the glaze during the last few minutes.

2 tbsp Brown Sugar, 2 tbsp Maple Syrup, 2 tbsp Mustard, ¼ tsp cayenne pepper, ¼ tsp dried Sage, ¼ tsp dried Rosemary

  • Season with salt and pepper to taste.

    Salt and Pepper

  • Simmer over direct heat, stirring occasionally, until thickened.

    2 lbs bone-in ham steaks

  • Place the ham steaks over the coals and grill for 2 minutes, rotate and cook 2 minutes longer

  • Flip and cook the steaks for another 4 to 5 minutes, rotating once halfway through.

Ham steaks are already cured and cooked through so you are grilling them to reheat to 140F, adding great grill marks and extra flavor.
For a gas grill:
Preheat the grill for indirect heat by turning 2 out of 3 of the burners on medium-high heat allowing the grill to heat up.
Use a smoker box or foil pouch on your gas grill for more smoked flavor!

Alternatives & Substitutions:
BBQ sauce also works great instead of the brown sugar mustard glaze.
