What Is A Breakfast Smashburger?

We’re all familiar with a classic smashburger. That’s where you smash a ground beef patty on a griddle, so it’s super thin. Then, you pile it with your favorite toppings on a bun.

Well, I got to thinking. Why can’t we do the same thing with breakfast sausage? And if we do it with breakfast sausage, then we can totally change classic sausage, egg & cheese sandwiches into something way more exciting.

Instead of a boring sausage patty, this technique adds so much more texture because the sausage gets nice and crispy. And when you top it with a fried egg and American cheese, the taste is incredible.

You’ll need a griddle or skillet for this recipe. And I also recommend using a smash burger press and griddle spatula.

  • Heat Griddle: Heat your griddle to 425F degrees. If using the Ninja FlexFlame, use the roast/bake function. Or heat a large skillet or griddle on the stove over medium-high heat.

  • Shape: Divide the sausage into 8 even pieces. Roll into balls.

  • Smash: Place the sausage balls on the griddle. Use a weight to smash them down. Cook for 1-2 minutes. Once they’re seared, use a spatula to flip them over. Cook 1-2 more minutes. Then, transfer to a pan.

  • Toast Muffins: Spread butter on the English muffins. Place them butter side down on the griddle and toast for about 30 seconds, until golden brown.

  • Fry Eggs: Add any leftover butter to the griddle. Crack the eggs onto the butter. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper. Cook 1-2 minutes. Flip. Add a slice of cheese on each egg. Cook 1-2 more minutes.

  • Assemble: Place one sausage patty on the bottom of the toasted English muffin. Add a fried egg, another layer of sausage and the top of the muffin.

If you like heat, add a couple dashes of Tabasco sauce to the sandwich.

  • American Cheese: Or your favorite breakfast cheese. Cheddar cheese is also a good choice.
  • English Muffins: Or use biscuits, buns, a bagel or croissants.
  • Butter: Some will be fore the English muffins and some is for cooking the eggs.
